Spirit House

Spiri House is the “Haus Tambaran” = Haus Faia (Fire House), Haus Boi (Boy’s House), Kunu, Mbelamu, Pilamo, Nakamal, Nasara.

It is commonly and mistakenly referred to by foreigners as Men’s House.

Role of the Haus Tambaran:
Ceremonial and Spiritual Center:
It is the most sacred structure in the village, dedicated to ancestral reverence and spiritual practices.

Spirit House is the palace where “harmony reigns”, served by Customary Elders as the servants who mindfully take care of the inter-seeping processes in balance among all communities of beings.

Men’s Gathering Place:
It is reserved for initiated men, who spend time there conversing, resting, and engaging in public debate.

Cultural and Political Hub:
Clan elders and men’s groups meet to discuss village and clan matters, and to make important decisions that affect the community.

Artistic Expression:
The houses are elaborately decorated with intricate carvings, paintings, and sculptures that showcase the artistic talents of the Sepik people.

Symbol of Balance for Harmony:
By providing a forum for discussion, ritual, and the passing down of traditions, the Haus Tambaran plays a vital role in ensuring social cohesion and spiritual balance within the community.
